For nine years the popular website Futility Closet has collected arresting curiosities in history, literature, language, art, philosophy, and mathematics. This book presents the best of them pipe-smoking robots, clairvoyant pennies, zoo jailbreaks, literary cannibals, corned beef in space, revolving squirrels, disappearing Scottish lighthouse keepers, reincarnated pussycats, dueling Churchills, horse spectacles, onrushing molasses, and hundreds more. Plus the obscure words, odd inventions, puzzles and paradoxes that have made the website a quirky favorite with millions of readers -- hundreds of examples of the marvelous, the diverting, and the strange, now in a portable format to occupy your idle hours.

I've been listening to the podcast lately, so I bought the book. I feel like I'm communing with a kindred spirit. The book is a collection of short sketches about curious things that actually happened. Sometimes it's just that they happened in the past and illustrate the maxim "The past is a foreign country" Other times they are just plain weird in any context, What they have in common is they are very interesting. I actually like the podcasts better, as he goes into more background than the book can contain. Any way, buy, listen, and enjoy.

I highly recommend both this book and the blog of the same name. Full of wonderful discoveries for the curious mind.
A really great book from a really great writer. I got it as a present for my parents and they also really enjoyed it.
This is a great book to read if your time is fragmented. Lots of amazing things to think about and enjoy in small increments! Loved it.
Purchased as a gift after listening to author's podcast, Futility Closet. Now, I am ordering one for myself. Very entertaining.
This is a fun book with many thought provoking anecdotes and stories - much like the website its author maintains. Highly recommended.
The odd, the amazing, the amusing and the tragic, mostly culled from the US, Canada and Europe, written up in articulate and witty prose. A book to enlighten as well as entertain. I highly recommend it.
Wonderful adaptation of one of my favorite websites. A most entertaining compendium of unusual knowledge by a fine writer. Watch out, you'll enjoy yourself and (shhhh....) you might even learn something!
